Robert O. Valdez, Executive Director

Robert Otto Valdez, Ph.D. joins the University of New Mexico as the Evaldezxecutive Director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Center for Health Policy.  He is a professor of Family and Community Medicine in School of Medicine and of Economics.  The Center will serve as a university-wide research organization dedicated to applied interdisciplinary research that addresses the social, behavioral, and economic factors that affect the health and health care of communities, and clinical practice improvement.  Center projects will emphasize the application of social science theories and methods to address health and health care concerns with the aim of reducing or eliminating health and health care disparities.  In short, the RWJF Center will be a statewide resource of applied social and behavioral science scholars working with clinician colleagues and community partners to improve the health and health care of New Mexicans by addressing concerns across multiple sectors of society. William Wiese, MD, MPH, Interim Associate Director for Health Sciences

Dr. Wiese returned to the School of Medicine in 2002 to launch the IPH. In the preceding five years, he worked in state government, including as Director of the Public Health Division in the NM Department of Health. Prior to that, he spent 25 years in the UNM Department of Family and Community Medicine, developing programs in primary care, community outreach, and public health. Nationally, he served on the original U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and currently represents the Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine on the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice.

Roberto A. Ibarra is an Associate Professor in Sociology at the University of New Mexico (UNM) specializing in diversity/minority issues in higher education.  He was Special Assistant for diversity to the UNM Preventsesident & Provost (2001-05) and is currently Interim Associate Director for Social Science at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Center for Health Policy (UNM).  From 1983 to 2001 he served at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (Emeritus); Assistant Dean of The Graduate School; and Assistant Dean of the College of Letters and Science.  He was Dean-in-Residence at the Council of Graduate Schools, Washington, D.C. (1994-95), and was a member of the Board of Directors of Walden University from 1996 to 2006.  He earned a Masters and Ph.D. in social/cultural anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1976), and his book, Beyond Affirmative Action: Reframing the Context of Higher Education, (2001) is a study of Latino graduate students, faculty, administrators and non-academics, that uncovers a new critical theory for diversity and educational change.   He recently completed a research project funded by the Ford Foundation that examined diversity initiatives in the Rural Health Interdisciplinary Program at the UNM Health Sciences program as well as introducing a new model fo diversity in the Dental Hygiene department at Northern Arizona University.
